Sublette County, Wyoming, is located in the western part of the state. Pinedale, the county seat, is located approximately 75 miles southeast of Jackson Hole and 125 miles from the south entrance to Yellowstone National Park.
The area is steeped with fur trapping and trading history and much of what attracted these early settlers to the area still remains at the heart of the best reasons to call Sublette County home abundant wildlife and endless outdoor recreation.
Elk, antelope, deer, and moose are plentiful in the area. Mountain lions, black bears, and big horn sheep can also be found throughout the county. Fishing in the area is world-class with the Green River and the New Fork River right out the backdoor. Guides and outfitters are numerous in the area, a testament to the outstanding big game hunting, fishing, and horse-packing that is available in the county.
Ranching is also a very significant part of the history and current industry in Sublette County. Ranches provide the wide-open spaces and lifestyle we associate with the Old West. It is still common to be caught in a cattle drive while traveling down the main county roads.
Set at approximately 7,100 in elevation and surrounded by three mountain ranges the Wind River, Gros Ventre, and Wyoming rugged and remote best describe the area. Summers are short and winters are long, but area residents make the most of both seasons. Long summer days can be filled with hiking, horse-packing, boating, and fishing. And in winter, pile on the clothes and enjoy some of the best snowmachining in the world, or head out to White Pine Ski Resort for some downhill or cross-country skiing, or try your luck with ice fishing on Fremont Lake or Halfmoon Lake.
Area Events & Attractions
The long summer days allow one the time to get out and really explore the areas endless outdoor recreational opportunitiesfishing, hiking, golfing, mountain biking, horse packing, and boating are just some of the activities to undertake.
Wintertime brings additional fun to the area with snowmobiling along the Continental Divide Trail and throughout the Wyoming Range. Other winter sports include dogsledding, ice hockey, downhill and cross-country skiing, and ice fishing.

Community services in Sublette County easily surpass counties twice, even three times, its size. With the recent development of two natural gas fields in the county, tax revenues have been put to good use and reinvested in the county.
Newer facilities in the county include the Sublette County Ag Center (Big Piney), Sublette County Indoor Ice Arena (Pinedale), the Pinedale Aquatic Center, two new public libraries (Pinedale and Big Piney/Marbleton), and two new medical clinics (Pinedale and Big Piney/Marbleton).
Additionally, the public schools in the county historically have had tremendous funding and both districts have been able to attract outstanding teachers. Significant funds have also been spent on school facilities and equipment throughout the county. The end result is seen by how well Sublette County students perform on both state and national levels.
Natural Gas Development
The last six years have brought a significant change to the rural landscape in Sublette County. The discovery of two of the nations largest, on-land, natural gas fields has resulted in year-round well drilling in Sublette County. Rigs dot the ridgeline south of Pinedale and can also be seen while floating down the New Fork River out of Boulder. There are certainly pros and cons to the development.
A boom typically brings with it opportunities and this has been certainly true of Sublette County. While recessionary pressure is being felt in the area, the downturn is much less than that being experienced elsewhere in the nation.
